This is the lower level of the barn which is the subject of the painting 10-10-10. A light snow had fallen and I was the object of interest for these Angus cows on a bright sunny winter morning.

The strong diagonal of the fence is what makes this painting work compostionally. Additionally I was attracted to the subject by the bold contrast between the dark interior of the lower level of the barn and the brightly lit exterior surfaces. The rust and blues of the tin roof along with the green lichen covered rockwork of the foundation provide interesting accents of color.

Two farm wagons in the field in front of the large farmstead barn. The long shadows cast by the wagons indicate that the sun is low in the sky. The barn in the scene is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the Mountain Farm Museum near Cherokee, NC. According to the park's pamphlet:

"No single building better symbolizes a farm now or in the past than a barn. It was a stable for livestock and the loft above stored much of the feed that would sustain the animals through the winter. Barns often provided a sheltered place for various endeavors ranging from woodworking to equipment repair. It was also where many farm tools, from hoes and harrows to plows and wagons, could be found when not in use."

This particular barn is the only building original to the site of the farm, but it was moved about 200 yards to its present location.

The haystack in front of the barn is surrounded by a locust pole fence to protect it from the livestock.

This is a late summer scene, late in the day with some mist moving across the mountains in the background.

I did a painting of this barn from the front over 20 years ago titled After the Storm. It was done just after a snowfall.

The barn is in the Caney Fork area of Jackson County and I had always wondered what it looked like from the field in back. A snowfall in January of 2000 provided an opportunity to see the barn in snow from this angle and this is the resulting painting.

This structure is gradually falling down as evidenced by the sagging roof line. The front is almost totally vine covered now. The view from the field is a good one from a compositional standpoint. The negative space provided by the snow covered field contrasts nicely with the dark tree covered hills behind the barn.

The flock of doves winging across the center of the painting provides an element of motion for an otherwise stark scene. Bare branches of the trees extending into the sky area create interesting patterns. The wooded areas of the background are isolated abstractions upon close inspection.
